Tour
the castles of the Highlands. Ride on little used roads
ranging from the main arteries of the A9, A96 and A82,
to the B class roads and even those that are too small
for a classification!
Some
Suggested Clover Leaf Routes with a Castle theme:
North
up one side of Loch Ness, up to the Moray Firth. On the
way North stop in at Castle Urquart, then continue up
through Inverness to Cawdor Castle, made famous by Shakespeare’s
play MacBeth, then onto Brodie Castle on the A96. Homeward
bound come South on the “forgotten” East side
of the loch. Narrow roads with isolated lochs and challenging
bends, but watch out for stray sheep, deer and the odd
wild haggis.
Go
West to the Isle of Skye on some of the most stunning
roads and stop to take in the amazing scenery. Stop at
Castle Eilein Donan, used in films such as Highlander
and James Bond’s MI6 Scottish HQ. Continue to Plockton,
the scene of the police drama series Hamish MacBeth starring
Robert Carlyle. Or take the road bridge to Skye and go
to the North of the island to visit the seat of the MacLeod
clan, Dunvegan Castle.
For
a good trip East, travel South on the A82 to Spean Bridge
then head East and pick up the A9 to go North. Ruthven
barracks lies along this route, a barracks to garrison
government troops to quell the rebellious Highlanders.
It is said we are still “revolting”!
For
the South bound part of the clover leaf, ride down the
A82 again and this tine stop at the Commando Memorial
just before Spean Bridge and pay tribute to the commandoes
who gave their lives in numerous conflicts. Then continue
South to Fort William. The original fort is no longer
in existence but the Ben Nevis distillery is worth a visit.
Ride down to Oban and then on the return leg come up through
Glencoe.
Other
routes can include themes such as:
·
Whisky Distilleries
· Salmon rivers
